Scythe Factory Village

The Factory Village in New London, New Hampshire, was located at the outlet of Pleasant Lake, which provided year-round water power for factories downstream. A grist mill was first established there in 1790. Over the next decades, the grist mill was joined by a wool carding mill, a tannery, a saw mill, a carpentry shop, and the Phillips, Messer & Colby Scythe Co. This manufacturer operated from 1835 to 1888 using three principal facilities: the Forge Shop, the Grind Shop, and the Office (where finishing and packing was done). The following slides were selected from those presented to the Northern New England Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology on May 4, 2013.  ▶ VIEW SLIDES & NOTES.
